We often describe a property as noisy or quiet. In practice, the acoustic environment can change dramatically from one side of the same building to another. A recent study makes that distinction especially interesting.
A home does not have one noise level
A bedroom facing a busy road may experience continuous tyre noise, buses, motorcycles and sharp individual peaks. A room at the rear of the same property may face a garden or sheltered courtyard and behave completely differently.
That quieter elevation is often described as a quiet façade. The useful idea is not that it is silent, but that there is a meaningful difference between the most-exposed and least-exposed sides of the building.
What the new research found
A 2026 Danish nationwide cohort study followed more than three million adults and modelled long-term road-traffic noise at both the most- and least-exposed façades of their homes. Greater exposure was associated with a higher risk of Parkinson disease, while access to a quieter façade appeared to weaken that association.
This was an observational study. It identifies an association; it does not prove that road noise causes Parkinson disease, nor that a particular window intervention prevents it. That distinction matters whenever research is translated into advice for homeowners.
Why room orientation matters
In new developments, designers may place bedrooms on sheltered elevations and use circulation or less noise-sensitive rooms as buffers. Existing London homes rarely offer that freedom. A Victorian terrace cannot be rotated, and the room facing the road may be the only practical bedroom.
The first useful step is therefore to stop treating the whole address as one acoustic condition. Which façade is exposed? Which room is affected? When does the noise occur? Is the problem a steady background or a series of distinct events?
Can retrofit work create a quieter side?
Retrofit cannot change the street outside, but it can change the level and character of sound entering important rooms. The result depends on the complete façade rather than the glass alone.
- Window glass, frame and opening configuration
- Perimeter seals and installation gaps
- Trickle vents and alternative ventilation paths
- Doors, walls, roofs and other flanking elements
- The frequency content and timing of the external noise
Measure the room that matters
A single outdoor average can be useful, but it cannot describe every lived experience. Night-time peaks, low-frequency bus or aircraft noise and the number of individual events can all influence how intrusive a room feels.
The better question is not simply, ‘How noisy is this house?’ It is: ‘Where is its quietest part, which rooms need protection, and which sound paths are preventing them from becoming quieter?’
