Electric vehicles are often described as quiet. That is true in an important but limited sense: they remove combustion-engine noise. It does not follow that replacing every car on a road will make every nearby home quiet.

The benefit depends on how the road is used

At low speeds, idling and acceleration can make the powertrain an important part of a conventional vehicle’s sound. An electric motor changes that balance. A 2025 measurement study of accelerating and decelerating vehicles found that, under typical urban acceleration, electric-vehicle sound power could be treated as broadly equivalent to steady-speed operation. In a modelled stop–start case at traffic lights, the difference in event sound exposure was 3 dB.

That is a useful finding, but not a promise of a 3 dB improvement at every façade. One vehicle test is not a traffic stream, and the result at a home also depends on distance, reflections, traffic volume, the proportion of heavy vehicles and the way the road is driven.

Tyres do not disappear with the engine

As speed rises, tyre–road noise becomes increasingly important. A UK government review of quiet electric and hybrid vehicles reported that differences are greater at lower speeds and that vehicle sound becomes more consistent at higher speeds as tyre–road noise dominates. More recent pass-by research continues to treat tyre contribution as a central part of electric-vehicle exterior noise.

The surface matters too. Texture, condition and wetness can alter tyre noise; vehicle and tyre design also vary. This is why electrification can change the character of a road without removing the familiar rush of tyres from a faster route.

Quiet vehicles are required to make sound at low speed

Very quiet vehicles create a safety problem for pedestrians who rely on hearing an approach. European requirements therefore specify an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, or AVAS, for relevant electric and hybrid vehicles. The system automatically generates sound from start-up to approximately 20 km/h and while reversing, subject to the detailed regulatory conditions.

AVAS is not simply unwanted noise: it has a safety purpose. It also means that the future low-speed soundscape is not silent. Its spectral character may be more noticeable than a single overall level suggests, particularly in a quiet street, although audibility and annoyance should not be treated as the same response.

Fleet studies suggest a real but conditional improvement

A 2025 study modelled traffic electrification in Sapporo using the CNOSSOS-EU emission model and actual traffic conditions. It predicted reductions in noise-related population exposure and health risk, with larger benefits where speeds were lower and a greater proportion of heavy vehicles became electric.

Those results are scenario estimates, not measured outcomes for UK homes. They combine a noise model with exposure–response relationships, so they should not be read as proof that electrification will produce the same health change elsewhere. Their practical value is in showing that fleet composition and traffic conditions alter the size of the potential benefit.

What should a homeowner expect?

A home beside a junction, bus route or slow urban street may experience a more meaningful change than one beside a free-flowing higher-speed road. The reduction may be especially apparent in engine revving, idling and acceleration events. Beside a faster route, tyre noise may continue to dominate many pass-bys.

Inside a bedroom, the result is filtered again by the building envelope and ventilation strategy. Open windows, trickle vents and lightweight elements can determine how much of the changed outdoor sound arrives indoors.

  • Identify whether the dominant events are engines, tyres, heavy vehicles, horns or another source
  • Observe speed and stop–start behaviour rather than relying only on the road classification
  • Consider the road surface and the proportion of buses, vans and lorries
  • Assess the façade and ventilation path if the concern is an internal room
  • Treat electrification as one part of noise management, alongside speed, surface, traffic volume and building design

A quieter powertrain is not the same as a quiet place

Electric vehicles can remove a significant source from urban traffic noise, and the evidence supports expecting worthwhile improvements in some low-speed settings. The effect is neither imaginary nor universal.

For residents, the useful question is not simply whether electric cars are quieter. It is which sound currently dominates this road, at this speed, outside this room—and which part electrification can realistically change.
